is john boehner. he was last seen in washington when he was re-elected speaker of the house. there are reports he and the house gop are at an annual retreat in williamsburg, yet conservatives like hugh hewitt are calling him a milk carton republican because he's gone missing on several very important debates. do you know where he is? >> you know, i have not personally seen this man, john boehner, but i have heard of him. i know who he is vaguely. i think he's the guy that had the most miserable, unpleasant speakership in the history of the republic, and it was because he had these conservative freshmen who came in all excited to undo the government, and they didn't understand that as speaker his job is to not undo the government. so he's had this problem where he can't please conservatives like hugh hewitt because they want him to champion real conservative principles but he can't get re-elected in his district, and republicans can't win on a national level if they champion those same values. i think right now boehner has chosen to just go quiet and sort of back away from th

and say enough of this. not speaker boehner, not mitch mcconnell, not eric cantor, kevin mccarthy. there's no one of stature within the republican party who is willing to stand up and say enough. the only person i remember really saying so in a direct fashion was former utah governor, former china ambassador jon huntsman. >> guys, we have to leave it there, although i guess i just want to say, i know, hopefully we will all be inspired to try to be one america again with the president's message on monday during the inauguration. thank you, toure. thank you, jonathan capehart. >> thanks. >> thank you. >>> next, more from the sunny gop retreat in williamsburg. stay with us. >> a majority of americans agree with us on this. and by the way, so did ronald reagan. >> oh, take a cheap shot at ronald reagan. what are you trying to do? impress jodie foster? are they able to bring the economy down. will john boehner at the end of the day have to do what he did with the tax bill, which is basically cede control of the house more or less to the democrats and have most of his party vote against something but allow a vote to come up that will let democrats and nancy pelosi yet again rescue the day. >> okay, jared. i want to play you something the president said on monday. you referenced it yourself. take a listen. >> they will not collect or ransom an exchange for not crashing the american economy. the financial well-being of the american people is not leverage to be used. >> jared, i put it to you, do they not realize this fight isn't just hurting the economy. it's also helping this president look like the only grown-up in washington. >> i don't think they're calculus on this stuff is as rational as your question suggests, of course. but, again, if you actually get out of this beltway, and i try to do it as much as possible, and talk to people, the question i consistently get is why doesn't washington really care about the problems that we fac

of boehner. they felt that speaker boehner was doing a good job, but at the same time in trying to do some things with this president, i'm not talking about center, i'm talking about even right of center, and they were complaining after listening to the speech that there could be and should be more cooperation. but, again, you got about 50 tea partiers that are very active and very much to the far, far right. >> yeah. >> yeah, and they don't come to washington to listen or to meet anybody or to find common ground. they come here to issue no votes and issue press releases and go home and tell people they didn't support anything or anybody, and they figure that they can win primaries that way. it's a new kind of politics, and i don't think it's constructive. >> the president though also, congressman, talked about the fact that the longer you're in the white house, the more humble you become, and there is an acknowledgment, is there not, that this has been a tough four years for him. >> it's been a very tough four years. keep in mind that i'm the ranking member of the oversight and government
